Sphinganine (d18:0) is an intermediate in the sphingolipid metabolic pathway[1]. Sphinganine (d18:0) is a precursor of ceramide and sphingosine and a substrate for sphingosine kinase, which produces sphingosine-1-phosphate[2]. Sphinganine (d18:0) can be used as a standard for the quantification of epidermal ceramide by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry[3]. Sphinganine (d18:0) can be used to prepare bovine serum albumin lipid complexes to study their effects on the inhibition of non-lysosomal glucosylceramidase β2 (GBA2)[4]. Sphinganine levels are significantly increased in response to certain mycotoxins, including fumonisins, and in certain cancers[5]. Sphinganine can block the activation of protein kinase C[6].
