Benzyl alcohol (Benzenemethanol) is an aromatic alcohol widely used in medicine, cosmetics, food and industry[1, 2]. Benzyl alcohol can be used as a local anesthetic for short-term superficial skin surgery[3]. Benzyl alcohol is naturally produced by many plants and is commonly found in fruits and teas, as well as in various essential oils[4].
In vivo, Benzyl alcohol (270mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to mice with acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury, which significantly reduced plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, reduced the area of liver lobule necrosis, and alleviated APAP-induced liver injury[5]. Benzyl alcohol (270mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to mice with APAP-induced liver injury, which inhibited the release of cytokines, chemokines, and high-mobility group protein 1, and suppressed inflammasome signaling[6].
