Coenzyme Q9 (Ubiquinone Q9) is a ubiquinone compound containing nine isoprene units. Coenzyme Q9 acts as a amphipathic component of the electron transport chain, playing a central role in endogenous antioxidant defense and cellular energy metabolism[1-2]. Coenzyme Q9 is the predominant form of ubiquinone in rodents, and Coenzyme Q9 is also normally present in human plasma, with corn oil being one of Coenzyme Q9 natural dietary sources. In research, Coenzyme Q9 is commonly employed to study mitochondrial dysfunction and related disease mechanisms[3-4].
In vivo, Coenzyme Q9 (supplemented in feed at 40mg/kg) was orally administered to broiler chickens subjected to cold stress (starting at 15 days of age and continuing until 21 days). Coenzyme Q9 significantly reduced the incidence of ascites and improved survival rate and production performance[5]. In guinea pigs, oral administration of Coenzyme Q9 (5mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks. Coenzyme Q9 significantly improved left ventricular function, reduced myocardial infarct area and apoptosis. The protective effect of Coenzyme Q9 was associated with its bioconversion to CoQ10[6].
