2-Phenylethanol is an important aromatic alcohol with a rose-like aroma [1].2-Phenylethanol has anti-tyrosinase and antibacterial activities [2]. 2-Phenylethanol is used in the food, flavor and cosmetic industries [3].
In F. graminearum, 2-Phenylethanol (0.6mg/mL, 1.2mg/mL, 2.4mg/mL; 14d) exhibited excellent inhibition of the mycelial growth of F. graminearum with the EC50 value at 0.328mg/mL [4]. In A. hydrophila, 2-Phenylethanol (1mg/mL; 24h) significantly inhibited A. hydrophila biofilm formation [5].
In C57BL/6 mice, inhalation of rose oil containing 2-Phenylethanol (2mL of 5% 2-Phenylethanol; inhalation; 15min) may be effective against depression and stress-related diseases [6]. In pregnant Long‐Evans rats, noteworthy dose-related teratogenic effects of 2-Phenylethanol (4.3mg/kg, 43mg/kg, 430mg/kg; po; 9d) in offspring manifested themselves in increased incidences of malformed eyes, neural‐tube defects, hydronephrosis, and limb defects [7]. In C57BL/6 mice, 2-Phenylethanol (2mL of 0.08% 2-Phenylethanol; inhalation; 2 hour a day for 7 days) modulates hippocampal endocannabinoid signaling to reduce anxiety-like behavioral defects in mice [8].
