Urobilin is a byproduct of hemoglobin degradation.1 It is formed via oxidation of the bilirubin metabolite urobilinogen and is excreted in both urine and feces by mammals, including humans. Urobilin has been used as a marker of human waste contamination in recreational and source waters.
