Potassium chloride is a salt commonly used in the preparation of phosphate-buffered saline and for the extraction and solubilization of proteins. It is a good source of potassium. It is also used in the hypotonic potassium chloride-propidium iodide protocol for univariate analysis of metaphase chromosomes; high concentrations of potassium (0.3-1.0 M) to dissociate eukaryotic ribosomes into subunits; and in the preparation of mitochondria to provide ion permeability support for tissues that exhibit a gel-like consistency when homogenized.
